Writing Comedy
I've noticed that writing comedy that is new and uniquely funny isn't a easy task, especially in the last 4 or 5 years while using growing trend of success on certian video websites.
When I have a seat after being inspired or sparked by something on TV, in the news or over a drama etc. etc, I often only jot down a line (the punchline) and a little blurb off what sparked that idea (for reference).
I then put my notebook away and permit idea play on my head over the next few hours. Note: don't over place an idea, just allow it to needlessly ponder on your mind. leaving it open for additional possibilities.
Now I know what your all thinking, 'Yeah, so?'
Well, the solution too that my buddy is simple. Have you ever sat down with an amazing idea, started writing, got with regards to a paragraph off your idea documented on paper, thinking your burning with it, and all of intense you brain assumes melt down. You've hit the proverbial wall.
What im getting at is, When your writing an element that is in your own opinion hilarious, there isn't a rush on setting it up onto paper. Why?
Because your idea, is the idea, and how you represent it is going to be your choice. If we rush things we tend get caught up in the heat on the moment and write anything we believe will make people laugh. And we do not, under any circumstances, desire to fall into the "think" category.
It is important that we never Imagine that something is funny.
A good principle is, if it made you laugh it will most likely make others laugh too.
Say this next line too yourself 5 or more times out loud.
If it makes me laugh, it'll make others laugh.
Infact Write that around the front cover of this notebook. note to self: Purchase a notebook and carry it everywhere with you, to help you write down all your ideas wherever you are.
Believe me when I say there is nothing more annoying than having an idea, not being able to record it and forgetting it by the point you get home.
Why a notebook but not a Netbook or an Android phone or an Ipod Touch. Personally I think writing something down by using a pen on paper surprisingly changes the style and feel on the line. When i type my jokes or little punchlines documented on my computer it doesn't seem to have the same or even have just as much character to it. Writing it down seems far more effective.
So what about when ive finish writing my sketch?
Huh? you've already finished? No your not. You've only finished writing the first draft. Its time to edit, re-edit and edit again. Believe it or not even the top comedians of today are doing this, among the better comedians in the world sit and think and write each little thing that pops in mind down, and cut a majority out (I deliberately didn't offer a figure because that part im afraid to state is down to learning from mistakes).

Note too beginners, Only oncoming of writing little 2 minute sketches( with regards to a page and a half), and work you in place toward writing One Act plays( about 30-40 pages) or 15-20 minute sketches( 20-25 pages).
